I, also, had a similar problem last week, after installing a new PC, but keeping my old Epson Stylus Photo RX 640 all-in-one printer/scanner. The computer recognised my printer, but would not allow it scan, giving the same excuse as you had. I did the following, and I got the Epson to scan as well as print:
1. click Start button.
2. click Devices and Printers.
Icons of printers appear.
3. right-click on your printer icon.
Drop-down menu appears, with various options.
4. left-click on the options, try each one in turn. But do not click on Remove Device.
