Icymi - Loss Of Sound Dell Laptop Lattitude D600

Hi all,
I put this up last week, and though I appreciate the help I've had so far, I'm still without sound.
My battered old laptop has stopped playing sounds. I'm on Windows XP.
I've looked at the troubleshooting guide, and it recommends uninstalling and reinstalling. I've done that and it's the same.
I uninstalled the driver, and went on the Dell website and successfully downloaded some zipped files.
I ran them, and I got an error message 'Device object not present' reload and try again.
I did and the same thing happened.
Any ideas please?

Also, in your previous post you mentioned 'removing a unit' to possibly correct the problem, but are not sure what that would be. That may be a reference to removing the on-board Modem unit (if fitted) which apparently is also indirectly connected with the Audio system and could cause audio problems if faulty.

Not sure of the validity of the post reference to a faulty modem, but note that in considering removing a Modem it will require removing the keyboard, Palm rest and possibly the display, which you not feel comfortable in attempting. A service manual showing how to disassemble a D600 is available at:-

One other thought, if there is a Modem present and it is possibly faulty you could firstly try uninstalling or disabling the Modem drivers via Windows Device Manager. Worth a try.

Eventually, cheesed off, I decided to go to the screen where it tells you what is installed (Device manager I think), and there were two examples of Sigma with yellow questions marks on them.
I deleted both of them, and then ran the install hardware wizard. And, it sprung to life!

The audio driver you downloaded might be incompatible with your Dell device. If you are not sure which version of the driver is matched your machine, then you could use a third party tool like OSToto Driver Talent to scan. It could find the best match driver for you. http:// www.ost oto.com /
