I Need A New Mobile But I'm Clueless

I need to be able to ring my best friend and chat for an 'hour'. Her OH has just insisted that they have the landline taken out.
I would ring her on the landline and it would cost me nothing. Now, I can only get hold of her on her mobile. I have a 'pay as you go' Samsung but I need a contract phone, I think. I don't know where to look or what to do.
I don't need all the gubbings that comes with phones. I just need to be able to ring her and chat, without worrying about the cost.
I feel as if I've lost her.
Any suggestions, please?

I am fairly computer savvy but mobile phone technology has left me behind. I have a Samsung GT S5220 mobile but it's just for emergencies, so that I can ring home, if I need to. Mr T does not have a mobile at all. I get a PAYG top-up perhaps once every four months. I can send texts but honestly, if someone rings me on my mobile, I have no idea how to accept the call because another stupid screen appears on the screen and it always goes to Voicemail. Then, when I try to access Voicemail, the key pad is hidden and I have to press the 'hold' button. This is the same as the on off button and invariably the phone switches off and I end up throwing it across the room. I definitely need a simpler phone. I have looked at the Doro ones. They seem easy to use.
I do need help from a youngster but I don't come into contact with clued -up teenagers anymore.
I'll have a look and see if our library offers anything like yours. Thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't doubt you for a moment, I just know it's good to be around teens, they are well up on everything and love to show you what they know in a comfortable and non jargon way. I always went for Nokia when buying phones, it was my son bought that smartphone for me, I had to get used to it. I think you've had plenty of sound advice, still can't see why your friend can't just use the same network as you and go on a free to same network package. You won't lose her, there are ways and means around everything.
