Google Photos And Google Drive

Hi all
Prior to "installing" my new PC, I uploaded all my photos and docs to Google photos and Google Drive as a precaution. This turned out to be very fortuitous. Suffice to say after a lot of trouble with the new PC, I lost all my photos and docs (Music I'd copied to an ext HD, was just about to copy over photos and docs when the PC totally crashed). However, although my photos and docs are "in the cloud", I would dearly love to get them backed up onto my external HD. I've searched on google but to no avail, am I missing something ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
