my laptop is telling me i'm working offline and i want to get online to update it, but computer says no. Any ideas please

You need to either plug it into your router/modem, or get the connection over the wireless connection.

There may be an icon bottom right that you can click on and progress.

If you're trying to update Windows XP you're wasting your time as all support for XP ceased on 8 April 2014.
