Windows 10 Download
16 Answers
I am running Windows 7. Have downloaded Windows 10 using the Windows 10 upgrade assistant. On downloading it takes an age to complete. All I can see is (Getting Updates, checking for updates) which runs for ever. I ran it overnight, but the same message is shown. I have downloaded the file to a disk and ran it but still have the same trouble. Any ideas please?

Are you getting a free upgrade? I sent my W10 laptop for repair to Knowhow recently and was not best pleased when it came back with Windows 8.1 reinstalled on it! So I rang Microsoft to enquire as to whether I could still download 10 for free. And it seems that they'll anyone download 10 free if they ask I had an issue with the download which was not quite the same as...

My advice is not to bother. I tried it in the summer (from W8.1) and it was not a success:

My own machine is still running perfectly well on W8.1 (as "perfectly" as anything to do with Microsoft runs). Mrs NJ has a comparatively new machine running W10. It has quite a few problems, not the least of which is that it is frequently disabled for periods whilst Microsoft applies "updates" (which are in effect fault fixes for a product that is nor completely fit for purpose). You cannot disable these updates in W10 as you can in earlier versions so from time to time your machine is unusable for a period (which can be lengthy on occasions). As well as this it frequently loses its internet connection ability which needs the reinstallation of the wireless driver:

Microsoft are getting away with murder. Not only is Windows a dog's breakfast but their Office suite is nothing to write home about. I subscribe to Office 365 (the only legal way to get it thes days) and for my money all I get with that is a load of aggro. Frequent "updates" (i.e. fault fixes) and a retrograde product that is far inferior to the one I first used many years ago.
So, if your machine ain't broke, don't try to fix it (because from my experience you will probably fail).

I had an issue with the download which was not quite the same as yours by the sound of it. I managed to google a solution. Have you tried ringing Microsoft? I actually found them very helpful

I'm surprised that you haven't switched to Open Office or Libra Office, which are not only free, but very similar to the earlier and better versions of MS Office, NJ.
Shh.. don't tell anyone, but as an MS partner, I get all my MS software for free, and still choose to use Open Office.

Maybe not the only one, hc, but I reckon you are in the minority.

Thanks for the tip, TC. I'll have a look round before I pay my next year's subscription.

Switched both of my machines (Desktop and laptop) over to W10 some time ago. Both completed without problem or hitches other than being a bit slow on the original install. Subsequent updates installed in a reasonable time of my choosing.
Far better than W8 (any version) and W/Vista, but only a little better than W7.

In concurrence with ichkeria, free upgrades are unreliable.
I installed the promotional free release on my Acer laptop and after the hell it was to complete the upgrade (but that was due to it having quite a full hard drive as I hadn't considered all the junk I'd hoarded on it) it caused me an inability to boot it up without performing a system restore then quickly escalated to the point where even that was a roll of the dice.
This wasn't a significant inconvenience since my Acer is my secondary laptop, I primarily use a Macbook Air but I quite respect my Acer still as it has twice this year served me well whilst I solved a power cord issue for my Macbook, so was *** just the same.
Eventually, I decided that I had nothing to lose by reinstalling Windows 10 so did so and that seems to have cleared it up, I haven't had the issue since.
As I heard, I wasn't alone in having had problems with that first release and thusly Microsoft has supposedly been improving them so I doubt you're using anything as bad. Though my Acer is 7-years-old. How old is your PC?
Either try a different installer or in concurrence with ichkeria, I as well advise that you get professional assistance from Microsoft support.
