Mouse Pointer Is Picking Up Lots Of Emails All At Once

I run Microsoft Office 2003 on a Windows 7 PC.
Today I find that I can't open a single email on its own because when I click on it multiple emails are coming up in a block.
In addition on the desktop when I click on an icon to open it it links to multiple icons also. Anyone know what's going on and how I can rectify it?

Have you tried turning it off and turning it on again? (Yes, I know that sounds like a facetious response but it's amazing how often it works!).

The next thing to try (fairly obviously) is another mouse. (I always keep a spare mouse handy because they always seem to go wrong when the shops are shut). PC World can sell you one a wired one for around a fiver (as can some supermarkets and discount stores).

If you're using a wireless mouse it might be worth changing the battery although I doubt that it would actually help.

If you still get the same problem with a different mouse then you'll need to consider the possibility of a virus or malware causing the problem. Run a full scan with your anti-virus program and with Malwarebytes (or with AdwCleaner).

Check that the shift key is not stuck down.

I have changed the wireless mouse for a wired one, scanned with a virus checker and shut down a few times.
I'll look again at the Shift key.
I'll report back.

I find that whacking it against the desk sometimes works too. I can't use a wire-less mouse as it tends to be sent flying off the desk by a little paw.

I changed the keyboard, rebooted and bingo - problem has gone away!
