if you have tried another charger and had the same result, id say the motherboard is dead or the input socket for the charger is faulty, if you know someone with the same charger you could try there's or buy an after market one off ebay £10 or less, i think its the charge port on laptop ? any good with a solder iron, you can buy the port on ebay solder old one out replace with new one.

Many thanks for updating us on the matter. I often get frustrated by Computers/Laptops, especially when I can't solve what is sometimes a simple issue.
Don't be put off that the shop got it going - as you will have gathered it is a common fault - why else would Dell and other manufacturers have solutions for this listed!
I suspect that time was a factor in it coming back - go figure!
tamborine, that what i was thinking, then it occurred to me, maybe the pwr button was stuck contacts etc, i cannot really say anymore without actually testing it on my bench, but it works again for the op, so that good news
