Why No Landline?

Why are there more and more people(especially young people) with no landline? I don't understand how they function!

Eddie...its my understanding that Sky still needs a BT landline to work. It may not have a phone attached to it, but its still a physical connection to the house, and only BT can provide it. Whether we call it a telephone line or a landline makes no difference

Virgin uses its own cable network, although that its only available in a small number of locations throughout the UK.

So, for the great majority of people, if you want the internet at home, and you want it to be fast and relatively cheap, a landline is still essential.

You do need landline connection with Sky. You don't have to have a phone attached, but you do have the phone line.

Thanks, chelle. I did look in to changing from Virgin to Sky last year but they told me I had to have a BT landline which I don't have.

I have asked Sky that myself, if I need a landline still. Mine is with BT, so there's no reason for them to mislead me, i think. They said something like- you need it for Sky TV, but not for Wi-Fi. Or the other way round- but I do still need it.

Personally I'd stick with Virgin anyway, much preferred it. Virgin not avaliable where I now live :(

Do you still need a satellite dish for Sky TV as I don't have one of those, either.

I believe Virgin media covers 70% of the population, so a slight exaggeration on your part.

VM are also the only ones who can give superfast, I have 100Mbs and it regularly achieves it, sometimes exceeding it. It depends on your use though - and how many in the house use it simultaneously.

The other problem with VM is, as pointed out above, it is dearer not to have the Landline.

I've been with Virgin donkeys years, ever since they took over my Telewest account. I was just trying to save money - thought I could regularly switch between the two.

I'm with GiffGaf and £5 lasts me a month. I was on the phone to my mother for 2 hours trying to use up my minutes.

I get 200 Mbps and regularly it shows 220. Wish the upload speed was a bit faster though

If you are with Virgin, than my advice is stay with them. The download speeds are normally very fast with a fibre cable connection.

Yes you need the dish but they supply that. Has the property ever had a BT line? They can enable a defunct line, and probvably won't charge if it means getting your custom

Another advantage to having mobile phones is the landline stopped ringing for the kids when they were living at home. I was quite fed up of being their answering service

There used to be a landline but the cable from the pole to the house came down in a gale a long time ago and has never been replaced.

Think I'll stick with Virgin.

My Sky is package with TV and internet. I thought it was all through the sky dish ,but there is an old landline in the house that I have not used for years. My GiffGaff phone can be set up as a mobile hotspot and you just connect your Laptop or PC via wifi. It then uses the phone's mobile data allowance. I have never yet managed to use the whole months allowance of data or calls.

You can't lose a corded landline phone,drop it down the toilet, leave it on the bus or drop it and smash the screen. I have enough problems with 'dry-eye' through staring at a large laptop screen without squinting at a tiny mobile one .The opticians will probably be doing a roaring trade in years to come. I do have an old mobile but it is rarely used. Comes in handy when I am out shopping .

I unplugged our landline ages ago after emailing all I wanted to know.
All our old relatives are now passed on so no one phones us on it. Only junk and spam so no loss there.
We have not missed it at all. We have Facetime and Whatsapp for family chats and Messenger and email too so why have a landline? Simply not necessary and no money to be saved by using it either.
We are grandparents in our sixties and really embrace the newer technologies.
Ditched the landline in our Turkey house too as Whatsapp and Facetime and TV are all now via the internet.

So, Eddie, you DO have a landline that you are paying for as part of your package.

Most smartphones can be used as a wifi hotspot - I often use mine like that when I'm away from home. You'd soon use your 1GB limit though, Eddie.
