Why are there more and more people(especially young people) with no landline? I don't understand how they function!

I don’t want to be in touch with people and I don’t want them to be in touch with me. I don’t want to surf the web, I don’t want to watch the TV, I don’t want to be troubled with inane e-mails. I have a PAYG mobile for emergencies and the occasional “There’s pigs on the line at Effingham Junction so I’ll be late. Get me a pint lined up (or put the kettle on, depending on which direction I’m travelling)”. It costs me a £20 top-up about every eighteen months or so.
I can understand some people having just a mobile. I have a landline because it suits me. I find the transmission much better and more reliable. But then I'm a funny old cuss.
