Ipad Switching Of

My Apple iPad keeps jumping out of the application I am using. Whether the Internet or games etc it just sort of gives up suddenly going back to the home board.
It is about five years old and someone said the battery was going. But if that is the case why doesn't it power down rather than just slipping out of the application?
Thanks

To restart, hold the power button for a few seconds.
This will force the iPad to reboot, and solves many problems.
* You should not drain the battery. It is better to recharge before your device shuts down.

Too many running apps can cause odd reactions, double press the home button and (depending on the IOS you have) you’ll either see a grid of apps or a horizontal line of apps. Swiping from side to side will show you all apps which are running, swiping each upward will close them. Once you’ve closed them all se if that improves the situation
