Economy 7 Meters

How does an economy 7 meter know it is time to change between rates?
Do they get sent a message, or do they have an internal clock? If it's a clock, how do they reset after a power cut?

I also think the person who fitted a replacement meter 20 years ago when ours stopped working gave me some wrong info (he said there were two night time periods with a one hour gap between).
Yes, I think you must be right eddie as despite numerous power cuts my bills still show that 50% of my consumption is consistently at night rate which is what I aim for with washer, water and dishwasher on timers and I only use the tumble dryer at night rate times.

Thinking about this we have been missing the obvious .The UK mains frequency is 50 cycles per second. So it acts as a built in clock. Every 50 cycles is one second. As long as you are in the EU / UK that is. In the USA & Canada the mains frequency is 60 cycles per second. Which is why any US electrical devices with a clock will run slow in the UK / EU even if you use a transformer to correct the voltage.
