Reducing Image File Size

Just occasionally I have reduced photo files in order to send them as attachments. It has been a while and now I cannot work out how I did it in the past. I think I have used Gimp rather than gThumb, both of which I have installed.

This time I cannot work out how to save the reduced resolution image (I don't want to reduce it dimensionally to a postage stamp) as a .jpg file as opposed to an .xcf (which for some reason comes out as about a sixfold bigger file with far lower resolution !).

Is anybody on here familiar with this - I want to work with what I have and have used in the past, please do not suggest installing something different because that is what you use. A step by step description would be most welcome.

The trick in Gimp is not to use 'Save' (or 'Save As') but 'Export As':
