Can anyone recommend some decent printers suitable for quite heavy use in a school for both documents and photos ?

For documents go for a laser printer. It is much cheaper per page to print b/w documents to a laser printer than to a ink jet type printer.

You can get black and white only lasers, or ones that also do colour.

Also make sure the printer is network enabled, it will say somethijng like "Network Ready". If it is network enabled you can print to it from any PC on your network.

If the printer is NOT network enabled and you plug it into one PC and that PC if OFF nobody else can print to the printer.

Also make sure the printer has plenty of memory. The more memory it has the larger the documents you can print.

There are plenty of good "name" brands like HP, Brother, Kyocera, Konica, Canon and you will not wrong with most of them.

Maybe ask at PC world, they have a business section and will suggest a printer more suited to heavy printing than a lightweight "home" printer.

I'd agree. Go for a colour, network ready laser printer. Epson, or one of the other brands mentioned above.
if you don't need color, I'd suggest shying away from it. The toner cartages are more expensive, I believe. Epsen is one of the top manufactures of printes, as well as HP's and both have my recommendation.
