I'm tired of being presented with images, many majestic but mostly of remote, forbidding, sunless places. I was never given the chance to vote for two colourful ones I would have chosen

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Nearly all versions of Windows let you choose your own desktop from any source you like (such as from photos you've taken yourself or from images you've found on the web). The only exception I know of is Windows 7 Starter Edition, which doesn't directly offer such a function. (There are workarounds available for it though).

Call up Desktop picture on your screen.
Call up Charms by pointing your mouse arrow at the top right corner of the screen, then swiping it downwards.
The list of Charms symbols appears.
Click on Settings Charm.
Choose Personalisation from the list of options.
You can now change the desktop image in My Themes.

Even if we ignore the fact that you can have any image you like as your desktop wallpaper, have you actually checked out all of the images offered by Microsoft?
