ipod trouble

i have messed up my ipod now i get a folder with an exclaimation mark there. i cant even restore it as my pc doesnt recognise it. i have reset it and reinstalled it but get no joy. help please

Download ipod updater from apple and don't plug the ipod in till you get the restore option. I'm clutching at straws here....I haven't experienced it....
