I am getting a lot of crackling on my phone. My provider for phone and broadband is TalkTalk but I don't know if they own the telephone line or if BT do so I don't know who to report it too.Anybody know? Thanks.

You always report faults to your own provider. It is up to them to report the fault to BT if it's their line. They might send a BT engineer out if they feel it's necessary.
thats strange every now and the i am getting that tooso much so i have to put the phone down and use my mobile and im on plusnet .my friend also get this on plusnet
You contract is with TalkTalk - BT Openreach (who own the lines) won't talk to you directly.

Have you tried a different phone handset - preferably a simple one that plugs directly into the socket?

If you haven't done that, then TalkTalk will almost certainly blame the problem on your handset.
I should have said; try a different handset before you report the problem.
As your service is giving you problems your initial call would be to your service provider.
If the fault is outside the property then BT / Openreach will rectify it ..
Should the fault be inside the property then it is down to yourself to either fix it or get someone to do it for you.
You can do the initial test yourself, this will determine if the fault is internal or external ..

Thanks for your answers. I should have mentioned I'm having trouble with the internet too.I keep losing my connection and cannot watch videos at the moment as they keep starting and stopping.Don't know if the 2 problems are connected at all.
Fixed phone I assume.

Your beef is with your supplier. That's who you contact. That they let BT connect the local link, is for them to moan at BT.

That stated BT still gets involved and if they aren't competent enough to find the error they will find a way to claim the issue is in your house somehow, and charge for the callout. So at the very least put a phone that you know is ok connected to the socket in the main box and confirm the issue is still there.

I suspect a dodgy connection or cable break is the most likely cause. These are intermittent and consequently difficult for BT to find and admit to.
Yes, a dodgy connection can affect both.

Thanks O_G
I get crackling all the time - really bad at times. Then at other times it is fine.
Your provider wont want to call BT out .. they will blame it on your internal wiring.
Were you to do the line test first at least you will be armed with the results when you callTalkTalk.
derek - I'm with plusnet and have that problem also. I have no joy with them, so when my contract is up I'm finishing with them. Can't wait.
Could it be the inter filter needs replacing? ( land line)
It is a long time but I used to be with TalkTalk years ago - I switched over from BT - hopeless they Talk Talk were. Everything went awry on me. I'm different tho because I have telephone lights, bells upstairs and down and I had to leave them and go back to BT. I was told then that BT probably "interfered" with the line cos it was their line.
bobbi - where is the interfilter - I'll have a look at that.
Sorry that should have read internet filter, it’s usually on the main socket where your landline comes into your house
Unless it's already build into the wall socket, it'll be what's plugged into the wall socket

changed filter/handset / checked connections
no different, its not all the time more like every third time i try to use it. my internet is fine no problem.

Tried phoning TalkTalk but it's just an automated message, can't speak to anyone as they have closed down the call centres.Phone still crackling and internet going off and coming back for a short time.
Go online to Talk Talk service centre and run a line test from there.
