I Recently Bought A Usb Stick

to copy across my photo's to copy and paste them onto my new laptop. sadly my old machine isn't compatible. the old Dell Inspiron is 2007 thirteen years old
. what USB stick would I need to buy to copy them onto the old machine, hope this makes some sense,

'Disk Manager' should let you see what the computer 'sees'. Can give clues. Or right click on the USB drive icon and see what it shows in 'properties'.

You've got the usb stick so I'd stay with that one for now, as a method of transferring files. Watch these for an assist.



It's how I transfer files from one pc to another pc especially if it's in another household. Easy and relatively quick.

Can say you cannot see the USB stick in your old computer. Is it showing in your new one ?

She can’t work out how to plug in a USB drive, she isn’t going to manage a SATA plug even if she can dismantle her computer to plug it in.

yes it shows in the new one, its shows in the old one but I don't know how to get it to transfer pics... I will wait till tomorrow and get my mate to help me, thanks for all the guidance

emmie, it is so easy - when you know how! If you take the time to learn you will kick yourself for not trying earlier. SlackAlice has posted a video showing you how to do it. I have posted a link explaining how to do it.

barry I am teaching myself this new totally modern tech. So if there is stuff I don't know how to do then bear with me.

I have looked at the link and understand, but inserting the usb in the old laptop, I only get so far, I need someone to sit with me and go over it, once that happens then we are good to go. this is a brand new windows 10, whereas I was working on a 13 year old laptop with windows 7. this is a whole different ballgame.....

I'd wait until your friend comes and rather than go and put the kettle on get her to talk you through what to do while you sit at the screen/keyboard - it will seem less mysterious then and be helpful in the future.

You will have File Manager on a Windows 7 lappy. Stick the USB in.
On the taskbar at the bottom you will see an orange folder icon (it also has a bit of blue). Click on that and your File Manager will open.

Hopefully in the left hand column you will see the word 'Pictures'. If you want to transfer all your photos just right click on that and choose 'send to'. You will see a list of options one of which will be your USB stick. If you can easily identify it, click it and the photos will magically copy over. It won't take as long as you think.

If you get that far we will try and get you through the really easy bit - transferring them to your new laptop.

Do much the same as you did to copy to the USB memory stick. Find the folder on the memory stick, right click and select copy. Go to wherever you want to copy on the laptop's drive, right click and select paste.
