USB is a standard, and a new stick should be compatible with any computer that has a USB port on it.
You may have to format the stick on your old computer before copying and plugging into your new computer.

There are several options depending on which version of Windows you are using, and how much data you want to transfer.
1. Email them to yourself. Zip the folder to reduce size.
2. Use a cloud service such as OneDrive.
3. Network your 2 computers using a Ethernet cable.
4. Write them to CD/DVD if you have a drive.
But the USB option should work.

There is only one type of ethernet. It would be far quicker, cheaper and simpler to use Dropbox or Google Drive. Every possible way of transferring files is explained here

Your USB stick should work, though.

If you want to connect two USB ports you would need a USB to USB cable. I'm unsure whether computers recognise what you've done and work automatically, or not, though.
Also unsure why the USB doesn't work immediately. Have you tried formatting it as suggested ? Does the computer even recognise something's plugged in ?
