It's really not a question of if, it's when. The last time a coronal mass ejection hit the earth, it completely took out the technology of the time, specifically the telegraph system. The next one, if it's big enough, will paralyse the earth unless we're massively lucky and have developed a way of shielding our planet from it by then.
This is, of course, the same argument about the next major meteor to strike the earth. We're hugely overdue for the next big one which, depending on its size and angle of entry, could quite literally tear the planet apart. We just have to hope that we have developed an effective method of protecting ourselves first...
