My OHs employer gave her a new laptop. Its a HP 440g7. Anyway according to google its would've cost us around £1000+
My question is why is it so expensive? I ask because we've never spent more than £300 on a laptop.

Really there is no comparison between a £300 laptop and a £1k plus laptop.
A cheap laptop is fine for sending emails, browsing the web, Facebook and YouTube especially if you are only going to be using at home for short periods.

most laptops are miles too much of everything for most users. My standard advice for anyone wanting a new laptop (unless they have specialist needs) is to find the cheapest one you can in Tesco and then buy it from EBay, amazon etc if it's cheaper. For most people, memory, disc space, speed etc is irrelevant these days. 99.9% of PCs are used to surf the net, send emails and create the odd word/excel doc.
I was answering the couple of posts above me. I don't get why the weirdness, Piggynose said it's supplied by her OH's employer. The fact we don't need machines like that at home may be a given but is irrelevant to the OP. The employer supplies the machine and will select the spec that's required surely?
