Rergret, you have not mentioned any thing about what type of files you need to recover from crashed/corrupt media.

For the purpose, no freeware is available. But lots of good softwares are available on net, you can find these without much difficulty.

I work in computers and pc inspector has helped me out no end!

Do a search for it, should be able to find it for free somewhere.

I tend to just use whatever I find on the Net when a problem occurs. If one doesn't work just download and try another. Just remember not to save/install anything to the disk you are trying to recover from or you may destroy the very thing you are looking for.
