On switching off, at bottom left of screen the Power symbol appears, a white circle with a vertical line at the top. It now has a small white circle at bottom right. I hope this doesn't mean the battery is failing already

TKS Trevor. I usually leave it on Sleep so that's probably the answer.

Try to shut down PC, not to chose sleeping mode, that can be problem, because system always are turned on and needs a restart
