All switched on in Settings, sounds on high, but rarely alerts me when I have a message. I have to keep looking at the screen to check. On Samsung phone. Thanks all.

inexplicably you need "conversation tones" to be ON

got into whatsapp, three dots top right - settings - notifications make sure the "conversation tones" switch is on
