(Partial answer) Electricity is produced by using a steam turbine to turn a generator. The turbine gearing causes the fixed magnets inside the generator to rotate. This induces a current (via electromagnetic induction) in the windings of the generator, generating electricity. The rotational speed of the magnets are directly proportional to the frequency of the generator output. The gearing used between the turbine and the generator causes a rotation 50 times per second, therefore 50 Hz electricity.
