Hiya Bannigan, with Torrent sites , when you are downloading you are also uploading to others who are sharing the same file - you need a programme to do this , theres loads about (personally I use a programme called BURST - its very very basic but does the job well). Torrents work on the basis of Seeders and Leechers, a Leecher is someone downloading the file ,however when that file is fully downloaded by yourself you then start seeding (IE uploading) and the percentage of your upload will show as its going along - its common practise to have a download/upload ratio of 1 to 1, so you effectively share with others what has been shared to yourself - theres loads of sites ,the better ones normally require registration (Usually free) and its worth checking the site forums to see whats on offer - the file itself is generally held on a "tracker" - you will initially download a Torrent file (Small file usually about
20 - 40kb) and once you click on that file the download will start ,if its a movid (mpeg/avi) the file size is usually in the region of 700MB and this will be saved wherever you designate on your hard disc.
It may be worthwhile having a look on google for a programme you would prefer to use and then have a look at some of the torrent sites to see whats on offer- they also show you the number of seeders/leechers on each file, the higher number of seeders, the quicker it will download - downloads are also generally much much quicker than what you will upload in return- as effectively you could be downloading at speeds up to whatever your connection speed is (Im on 1mb Broadband and get downloads at over 100kbs per second - whereas my uploads are usually 25-30kbs) so it takes a lot longer to Seed than to leech.
Hope im not confusing this, its nowhere near as complicated as Im making it sound
