Aah. I accidentally left my iPhone in a trousers pocket and it's gone through a wash. The Apple logo pops up sporadically but nothing else is happening. What can I do?

Take the battery out, prop it up on kitchen towel to let water drain out of ports and wait until you can be sure it is dry.  If you've any silicon bags or similar water absorbers you use for condensation use them.

Does use rice because the grains might get in to the ports.

I've just realised you can't easily take the battery out of your phone.

Ignore that bit but the rest of my post stands.  Make sure it is fully switched off

Thanks Barry.

Get your hair dryer on it.

Hairdryer. Good thinking. Thank you, ladybirder

Thank you Clover. It worked for my daughter when her phone slid out of her top pocket as she bent over a bucket of water.

Question Author

Thanks, ladybirder. I'll carry on hoping mine can be rescued too. I've given it a good blast from the hairdryer and will leave it overnight in the boiler room.

I never thought I'd be attached to a phone, but I do love that phone.

Ideally you should be rinsing your phone in distilled water first, before attempting to try it. Not great with the battery connected (not much you can do about that) however it would increase the chances of making sure that there isn't minerals in the water that, once dried, could kill your phone anyway.

Google gave me this :-

All iPhones, including the iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro and Pro Max, and the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, all come with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating. This means, they can be submerged in water up to a depth of six metres, for up to 30 minutes.

If you've got it, giving a quick dip and rinse in isopropyl alcohol would also increase the chances of survival too. I accept that it's not something that many people have on hand.

And nope, gin won't work :p

Jo: good luck *fingers crossed*

Thanks, Canary. My phone was in the wash for 40 minutes, so I don't know if it will survive. I'll see in the morning.
I've still got my old phone, so it's not the end of the world. But I did love that one! ☹️

Question Author

Thanks, Dizmo. I don't have that kind of alcohol hanging around :) Plenty of the usual stuff, but, as you say that's not going to help

Buy a new one Clover, and, then remember to check pockets before you wash

An expensive lesson😇

Claim on your insurance.

Can we have an update please Clover.  Is it still alive this morning?
