how can i make vids play brighter ?

i have always had a problem with my pc that vids and games are always far too dark.to play games i have to adjust in-game gamma and for some games the problem is so bad i have to increase the gamma significantly on the pc control panel before playing it !

with vids i have to use windows media player as this is the only player i have found that allows brightness to be adjusted.

my problem at the moment is that i have 2 vids that wont play properly in wmp(no audio) but they run fine in vlc player but of course they are too dark to watch !

any suggestions how i can rid myself of the darkness ?!!!!!

calibrate it as it says, and see if the videos improve.
