can any one tell me how i get to record with cool edit i've got my guitar in through the mic port and its coming through my speakers but it won't record any help would be great as i'm brand new to home recording and there's not much in the manual

You need to set your soundcard's "recording source" to Line-in - you can see if this is working by pressing F10 (I think) in Cool Edit to get a real-time left/right level of what will be recorded when you press the button to do so.

Errm, I think if you got it plugged in the mic socket, you need to set the recording source to mic.
