I have powered-up a CD-ROM Drive, removed from a computer, and connected the analogue output to my hi-fi as the CD bit is being awkward about playing copied CD's. This arrangement doesn't appear to work!!!

Can somebody please tell me why?

Cheers.

Where is your power coming from??
and how are you going to get the sound to the hi-fi?

Basically you cant

The original question was "Why?" though!!
There is no reason why this shouldn't work provided the CD-ROM Drive output line level is within the range of the Hi-Fi input line level.

Typically the CD-ROM should be putting out around 0.7V and the Hi-Fi should be able to cope with 0.3V to 2V.

If the output is too low for the input, a pre-amplifier is required to boost the signal.

Which input are you using on the Hi-Fi?

Hi Kempie.

A sensible answer at last!!!

I am using video/phono auxillary which is where I normally plug in the output from a turntable. The odd thing is that if I plug in a pair of stereo headphones to the miniature stereo jack at the front of the CD-ROM in the comp, I hear sounds. Doing this with the free-standing CD-ROM Drive I am experimenting with does not produce any sounds at all!!!

I would have expected it to work, but as it doesn't, why not use a jack to phono lead from the headphone out socket to the aux in of your hifi?
I presume that you have loaded a music CD and that it is spinning-up OK...

No, I haven't tried connecting a jack-to-phono lead 'cos there ain't any sound comming out when I plug headphones in!!!

P.S. The disk IS spinning.
I might be wrong, but does the CD-drive not need the software from the PC to function?

Hey Guys:
Everything O.K. now. The CD-ROM drive I was using was duff!!!!!!! Different one works a treat.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers.

They can sometimes run on their own, depending on the drive itself. Some will not play a CD via analogue outputs on just the software inside.

You can get hi-fi units which read the entire CD off into RAM, and play back digitally from there, resulting in a theoretical silent machine, and error-free playback.
