If pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. What is the base of natural logarithms ie what is the value derived from?

Its e which is equal to 2.71828, but I can't remember why. I'll ask my mate who is a professor in Maths and let you know, if no one else has put an answer up by then.
Just got my mates answer back. It is the only function where the derivative is equal to the original function. d/dx e^x = e^x
