My mother has got a fairly old computer and the ither day I tried to update some things on it such as virus software and maybe the driver. Her computer is windows 98 and has broasdband. I managed to install the stuff from the windows official websire and restarted the computer to get it all going. Afterwards, without checking, I went out for a meal. When my mother came back to it in the morning the internet would not work. She asked me to have a look at it and so i was on it for several hours. I couldnt manage to do anything that would help. Im now worried that i will have to pay the expenses and wanted some advise before calling in some random electrician or computer guy who will probably charge a bomb.
By the way Im not too sure of what i installed either...but it was off the windows site so it werent faake or anything.

Thanks in advance

Dan, I hate to say this but if YOU have no idea what you installed and changed, how will anybody else be able to assist you without some kind of starting point.

The best bet for the internet would be to uninstall and reinstall the software that must have been supplied with the hardware when the broadband was first installed.

ive been told by others to do this, i will try it. The reason I dont know th eupdates is because i do it automatically at home on my pc and dont think about it. I hardly looked at the screen let alone look at what was updated...foolishness on my part. ;-(
Microsoft have not supported win98 now for some time so only your god knows what you downloaded and installed. There is nothing wrong with Win 98 as an operating system and it is especially suitable for older machines however don't waste your time looking for updates on the web. I suspect you downloaded and installed Microsofts latest version of Internet Explorer which is not compatable with Win 98. The only remedy is to uninstall Internet Explorer and re-install a version no higher than 6.0. If this doesn't work, your only recourse is to get someone who knows what they are doing to save all data to another media, format the hard drive, re-install Win98 and re-install all saved data. A little knowledge is a dangerous (and expensive) thing.
