where has the pound symbol gone on my keyboard?

usually, when holding shift and 3....the pound symbol appears.....but now a hash does

Its inflation that does it, the pound's value is so low now that it is not worth its own symbol on the keyboard any more.
Sounds like your keyboard settings have changed. Go to Control Panel>Regional and Language Options and then make sure it's all set to English (United Kingdom).
I have this problem with different keys. My " and @ have been transposed since I upgraded to XP. Used to be fine, settings are correct English (United Kingdom).
ugly_bob - You also need to ensure that the Input Language is set to English (United Kingdom).

In the Regional and Language Options click on the tab named Languages.

There you will find a box with the heading Text services and input languages - click the Details button.

In the Settings tab ensure that in Default input language you have selected English (United Kingtom).
