CD-R disc not recognised

After loads of problems (Blue Screens and Freeze Ups) with Roxio 8 Media Creator I bought Nero 7.
My Dell 9100 has a Philips DVD RW DVD8631 burner.
I now find that any data discs compiled with Roxio (now removed ) are not recognised by Nero or My Computer . It reports "no disc" or just hangs seeking it.I have checked the burner has the latest firmware.

Am I going to have to install both of these bloated packages ?

my advice to you is the following: -

Reinstall Roxio

Copy data disc(s) to your hard drive

Unistall roxio

Erase all discs using Nero 7

recopy data onto discs with Nero.

Or if Nero will not even recognise a blank disc, then erase the disc(s) using Roxio before uninstalling it. If you windows XP, use that to erase, copy, write etc etc.
