Help! the company I bought my computer from, Dan has gone bust, so I have no online support. I have a fairly ordianry PC running windows 98 and Works2000. I had start up problems so wiped the c drive and then reloaded all my programs. Every thing is fine, but the WP files I backed up onto CD won't open. I can load the speadsheet files (onthe same CD), and the pictures are all still there, but the machine just won't read the word files. I assume it is a software problem (as the spreadsheet files are ok therefore it can't be the cd backup files). I have uninstalled the works 2000 and reinstalled but still the same problem. In wordpad the files are little squares and questions marks etc, but the text is still there in amongst it all. Is there anyway I can test the word part of works to make sure if it is working properly or can anyone suggest anything else? The microsoft website font is tiny and doing my head in and no one has replied to my question. please does anyone know what to do, or how to recover these files so my PC can read them. cheers Miranda (pulling hair out for two days now!

Have you copied the files from your CD to the hard drive then tried to open them? I ask this as Word creates a temporary file in the same directory as the original document and will not be able to write to the CD. Also, when you copy files to CD you change the attributes to read only. You will have to reset them after copying them to the hard drive. Have you created new files using your re-installed Word? Where they OK? This will show whether the application is running OK.
Hi - I also have a Dan computer, bought in April 2000. It was such a shame when they went out of business, they seemed a good company and I am very happy with my PC. Of course, like any other, it throws a few wobblies sometimes! If you want to keep in touch so we can swap notes, email me at [email protected].
