Just installed a 2nd hard drive of 320 gig � why does it only register 290 available for use?

Because 320GB is quoted using the decimal number system.

Computers use the binary numbering system, i.e. 0's and 1's. To find how much you'll really be getting, divide your number by 1024^3:

320,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824

And it gives 298GB.
The formatting of the disk takes up the difference in the figures. Same with a CD if you format it
