Hi - might seem a daft question, but if I link 2 pcs via, say, an ethernet cable, will they form a network capable of playing games? I want to link 2 to play "Age of Empires" against a friend, but don't want to go to the hassle if it won't work. If not, how can this be done? (btw - the game supports multiple players)

If you link via ethernet, you game should ask when you go two player if it is via network or internet

select netwrk

You will need to use a special type of network cable, refered to as a crossover cable to connect 2 pc's via network cards. You will be able to get this from any pc or computer game shop. An Xbox link cable will do the trick. Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup (Running the network setup wizard is easiest).
If you have difficulties, disable any firewall software you have. This won't hurt as long as you aren't on the internet.
