AOL Hell...

Hi i have been on AOL for about 18 months and i'm now moving to an NTL area and i want to use their BB. I just phoned AOL to cancel and they want me to pay about �100 to buy out my contract with them. Can they do this? I didn't even think i was still under an contract as i thought it had to be for a minimum of 12 months and i've been with then just over a year and a half!!!

I called them again and said i was unhappy with their service and that i was thinking of moving out of the country anyway and they suggested that i find a friend to take over my account untill my contract(????) runs out. I told them that wasn't possible and that i wouldn't pay and they told me they would pass it on to a debt collector.

Well i tried to cancel before and they sweet talked me into staying with them by saying they would reduce my price plan by �10 a month. They say that by exepting there offer i stared a new contract with them....which i didn't even know about. They said they would have sent me an email after changing my price plan and by opening it i agreed to the new Ts&Cs of a contract. I can't even remeber getting that email. WTF are they doing. I've heard alot of people saying it's easier to get blood from a stone that it is to cancel an AOL contract. I guess they were right.

Also try talking to your Trading Standards officer at your local council offices, they may be able to help.

if u'v been with them for 18 months your contract must be nearly up isnt it? No company's going to bother with debt collectors for 50 quid so just stop using their service & stop paying!

Hi, I had terrible trouble with AOL. It wasn't compatible with my anti-virus and kept disconnecting every five to ten minutes; despite this they wouldn't let me out of my 1 year contract and I'm still paying for a service I cannot use. Apparently you are locked in for one year but I thought you could cancel as and when once the year is up.I hope so, or come November I'll be in dispute with them again. We both need to read the small print.

Yeah turns out that when i tried to cancel when my first 12 months were up they sweet talked me into staying by offering to knock �10 a month off my bill. By accepting there offer i aparently signed into a new 12 month contract which i wasn't told about. Contacted OFCOM and T Standards and both told me AOL are in the wrong and have breached the Miss Representation Act of 1967 as they did not tell me i was entering into a new contract. Oh hum. Now i'm off the write them a nice letter.......

Oh and i found out that the New York Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer, won a law suit against AOL late last year, over its cancellation practices. They will do anything it takes to get you to stay. Even if you think you have cancelled they still take your money. One guy went to Iraq for a year and cancelled his AOL before he left. Came back to find they had been draining his account for the year he was away.

yeah, I cancelled my aol and then they tried to charge me for when I never had it!! and to top it off we were paying for a 2meg line and only received half meg... they sent the bill to a debt collector and I told them if they want to pay me back for over charging me then maybe I would be willing, and even then they can go and whistle... gggrrrr just the thought of AOhell winds me up!
