Is there any way I can change the colour of the names of the desktop icons so that they are more visible against a white desktop?

Thanks a million vehelpfulguy - you are truly well named - that has done the job admirably.
To actually change the colors, right click on the desktop to get display properties, then select appearance and then advanced, then on the ''item:'' list scroll down to find ''selected items'' and you will also get a choice to change the font size and colour.
Almost forgot, you can also scroll down to ''icon'' and select the font to be bold.
