'G' on my V66 mobile

I have a Motorola V66, converted to pay as you go from a contract, and there is a 'G' in a box next to the time on the screen all the time. I cant find the manual, so dont know what it is. Anyone got any ideas? It wasnt there (I dont think) when it was on a contract
