Windows XP Dial Up

I have a computer running Windows XP. When I connect to the internet (I am with Orange dial up) everything is great until I close the window. When I close the window for explorer I used to get the window with 'disconnect' or 'stay connected'. This window no longer appears, so the only way I can disconnect is to turn my computer to standby. The little computer icons are no longer there either, all I have is the traffic light icon.

How do I get this window back?

Does it still dialup automatically? Or do you do it manually?

Have a look in Internet Options, Connections in IE and see what the settings are.

When I open IE I get a little window with opition to 'connect' I click on this and it dials the number and connects me. Have gone into the settings you describe and there is nothing about disconnecting.

Have had this problem once before but cannot remember how I resolved it!

I have been considering moving to broadband, but have been putting it off (too much hassle!), I am not an idiot as regards computers but this has got me really stumped. It is so inconvenient to have to turn the computer to standby everytime I want to disconnect!
another way to disconnect is to right click the 2 monitor icons in your tray when yuou are connected, and select "disconnect". That is what I do.

The two monitor icons have disappeared too!
Sounds like your dialup connection has become corrupted, as everything else looks right.

You could try r-click Network Places, properties, select the dialup conenction, r-click, properties and make sure the Show Icon In Notification Area is selected. That should bring the monitor icon back.

Or even better, if you know how to setup the dialup connection, delete it and recreate the connection.
