I'm a terminology ignoramus. Is what I'm participating in called a chatroom? If so, I can see how inappropriate it is for children to have access to it and I'm even more convinced that they should be encouraged to play outside and get some exercise like we used to do. Obviously I belong to the 'do as I say, not as I do' category, but then, I'm an adult.

This isn't a chatroom, no. You use msn messenger, or some other instant messenger, to talk to your friends? If so, a chat room is just like that, but on a website, and there are lots of people there, many you don't know.
A chat room operates in real time like a telephone as opposed to leaving a message, and you wouldn't want a young girl talking to complete strangers on the telephone. A chat room is actually more dangerous than a telephone cos on the telephone you would suss out an idea of age and sex but in a chat room you would have no idea that the 13 year old girls your daughter is talking to is in fact an 60 year old guy that is striking up a friendship with ill intent.
