Vista
Was supposed to be out around now but postponed until 1st quarter 2007 although there are beta versions available to some users.
As has been said

Windows Vista.

End of this year (2006) or begining of next (2007)

And if I were you I would NOT rush to buy it or install it.

It has had a tortured development process with function being added then removed over the years.

To get the best from it it is likely to require a hefty PC with a powerful graphics card.

I would stick with XP until at least the end of 2007 because by then they may have got it right.
What happened to Longhorn?
I have been testing the Beta version on a high-spec PC for several months now and find it slow, has compatability problems with the usual downloadable programmes such as Quicktime, Avast, Zone Alarm etc. and has even crashed so comprehensively that it required a complete re-install.
Can find no improvements over XP which would warrant an outlay in excess of 100 to upgrade to it.
Hopefully the final release will be bug-free but considering Microsofts record to date, I won`t be holding my breath
druiaghtagh, Longhorn was Micorsoft's internal name for the product, while it was in development. The official name is Vista
