Problem with my PS2

I've had my PS2 now for a few years now.However it will not play any PS2 Games any longer yet it will play dvd's & music cd's.Does anyone know why this is?.

A couple of the games that i tried do have scratches here & there but there are other games that don't have scratches & they still will not play.

2 things sometimes happen.Once the disc is in the machine the screen goes to black & the word playstation2 appears on the screen.Then the screen goes black & nothing else happens.The machine then will start making a noise as if it is having trouble reading the disc.The other thing that will happen sometimes is you can hear the disc spinning around inside the PS2 & then the screen will change & it shows you a pic of a memory card .

I thought at first it was the laser but it can't be if i can play music cd's & dvd's on it.I'm i better off buying another ps2?.

Can anyone help?
