no padlock

I have just visited a secure page where I had to give my credit card details and although the address was https (with the S) there was no padlock in the bottom right corner so I rang the company and they assured me it was OK .............any body got any ideas??? is it because I use the new Internet Explorer 7 ?

Some sites use a system where you enter your details and session is established and the data transmitted securely when you press "OK" or send or whatever.

They tend to do this because they think it's more efficient. However it's not good practice from a customer comfort point of view as you can see.

Personally I try to avoid anyone who does it

It might be IE7 in your case. I have IE6 at work and went to a site i know has encryption. Sure enough the padlock was there. Just got home and went to the same site in IE7, and I can't see the padlock. If you're on an https site you're probably fine.

In IE 7 the padlock is right netx to the address bar - where refresh is these days
