They can pick up your address from sites you visit or they just send millions of spam to random addresses. Some get thru some dont.

I also get at least twenty items of junk mail on a daily basis and it's more than likely because I have a website with my email address published on it.

One way of cutting back on the junk is to ensure that you don't have your email address on the internet - not on forums, personal websites etc. Clever little bots are able to pick up your email address and send non-stop junk to it!

You can encode your email address on websites to help prevent bots from reading them. See here for an example:
