I want to transfer some of my 2000 vinyl albums to CD which I presume I can do via my PC. Does anyone know what software I might need & where to get it - also what cables do I need (twin phono at stereo amp end?). My technical expertise is back in the vinyl age i.e. I can just about work a record deck, so help will be much appreciated. Thank you all

You will need a lead having twin phono at one end and 8mm stereo jack plug at the other end. The jack plugs into the line-in socket on your pc sound card
You can do it 2 ways, 1. With your record deck This must have a built in ampliefier) conected to your sound card, and if you have nero on your P.C. you use there new wave sound editor. or 2. Buy a usb turntable and you get all the software included for about 119 click here = http://www.firebox.com/index.html?dir=firebox& action=product&pid=1401&src_t=sme
Once you are connected you can do the recording (and clean up and scratches, etc.) using Audacity, which is a FREE audio recorder and editor.

Thank you everyone!
Audacity is a good, free program but not quite as easy to use as some. If you don't want to spend too much, look at the earlier versions of 'Magix Audio Cleaning Lab' (under the Focus banner in the cheap racks in supermarkets and Currys/PC World either 4.99 or 9.99). Very good package. The newest versions usually cost about 20 but include a lead for connecting a deck to the PC. The USB deck mentioned above is an easy solution but expensive. I use a Bush MTT1 turntable (built-in pre-amp) 50 or less (even got a good review in 'What Hi-Fi').

Thanks for the reminder Wideboy .. I have a few decks & amps to mess with, but I did buy the Bush MTT1 about six years ago because of the preamp with the intention of using it with a micro cd system. Hardly used it, so I'll dig it out from cold storage and give it a go once my cable arrives.
