Does anyone know why you are not supposed to put them into a lamp that is on a timer? Thats what is says on the pack anyway.

Crikey - No. Mine have got them in. Whats supposed to happen?
Are you sure it says Timer and not Dimmer?
Some timers have a random function to simulate someone at home moving from room to room to deter burglars - generally the more you switch on and off a fluorescent light the shorter it will last - also some timers are electronic and starting a fluorescent light causes a spike in the electric which can damage an electroninc circuit - there are available some energy saving lights that have dealt with this problem.
