As well as being a security problem if not set up correctly their are many faults with a wireless connection. Microsoft have tried to fix some problems with Visa. Many people have put the wireless adaptor in the bin and connected to broadband using the Ethernet cable. A router sometimes comes with this cable.
A few things to try:

Check your router is on/the lights are as they should be! If possible, get a friend with a wireless lappy to see if s/he can connect to your network.

Reboot your router.

Try connecting to your router by cable and check that all the settings are correct.

If a neighbour has set up a network using the same channel as you, it could be interfering with your set up - try swapping to a different channel.

Try resetting your router and rebuilding the network (there's usually a button you can press).

If a neighbour has set up a network using the same channel as you, it could be interfering with your set up - try swapping to a different channel.
If you haven't already you may just need to unplug the router / and or modem - leave a couple of minutes and then plug back in. (This will reboot everything as LeMarchand suggests)

It's always cured my NTL wireless problems. (Which have been very rare I have to say!!)
I sometimes found that wireless signals, probably emanating from a neighbour corrupted my router settings.

In the address box type 192.168.2.1 which will usually get into your router and examine or change the settings agreed with your internet provider.
