A mate and me love playing age of empires 2, and were wondering if we link our pcs using a network cable, would we create a 'network' to play each other? Can this be done without the need to go online? Even using a router (but pref not?)

yeh....its called a LAN(Local Area Network) game
To connect your pc's directly you need a crossover network cable. If you go through a router or switch then you need straight through cables. You can get both types at most computer shops.
if you are both online your could use Hamachi to make a virtual lan between the computers...

Just google Hamachi, its quite popular

Bob, seems Hamachi might be ideal, does it just disconnect when we're finished?
yep, it runs just like a regular program, and it adds an icon in your network connections as if you actually had an ethernet cable connecting the two computers.
